Ever ask in a forum or on the BMW MOA Facebook page, “What is the best aftermarket seat?” Well I have, and I quickly learned there are as many opinions as there are people in the MOA.
I ride a 2016 BMW F 700 GS, and as most BMW riders know, if you want to ride further than 30 miles, a seat swap is required. Over the years, I’ve tried several other seats including a Sargent and a BMW Comfort seat. While both added miles to my ride and time in the saddle, I always felt like there had to be something even more comfortable.
Looking at the quality of the Seat Concepts design, along with their reasonable prices and great reviews, I had to try them out. Once the seat arrived, it popped right in and looked promising. On my first quick ride around the neighborhood, I noticed the seat felt several inches lower even though it’s technically only one inch lower—a good option for anyone looking to lower their seating position a bit without doing any mechanical work. Just keep in mind this will also change the ergonomics of your riding position, namely your legs to foot pegs.
Another notable difference compared to my stock seat is that the front of the foam is built up, and the back is spread out a bit, like a pan, presumably to do a better job of holding your tush in place. This works to reduce the slope of the seat into tank feeling which I’ve noticed is a common complaint for riders of the F 700 FS. With the Seat Concepts product, I found the foam to be firm and the seat itself wider than the other seats I’d tried. Finally, the stitching is solid, and overall, I found the craftmanship to be of very high quality. You can tell right away that these seats are made to last!
All of that together seemed to be a recipe for success as I was able to ride 180 or so miles to the most recent Wisconsin Dells rally and didn’t feel the need to stop and stretch. That was a first for me, and I think it was because the wider design of the seat really helps spread out those pressure points in a way that adds miles and time in the saddle.
I’m tall for a woman at 5’9 with a 31” inseam, so for me the seat felt a little too low and I didn’t like losing inches from the seat to the pegs, having to bend my knees a little more than I was used to. That was my only complaint with the seat, as I found it to be a fine trade-off in exchange for the additional comfort and added time in the saddle.
All in, I highly recommend the Seat Concepts Lowered seat for the F 700 GS. I will definitely be looking at their offerings for a higher, do it all, option.
